My Mini-Music Rant

on

I was losing hope & faith in music. I’m a self-proclaimed music junkie. Give me everything from Abba to ZZ Top. America to YES. I take it all! Barry Manilow to Barry White. But I had started losing my faith in music. Where were my strong female singers? The Pat Benetars, Miss Jackson’s and Heart of my day?! Where were (aside from Jigga, who’s always been amazing) all the great rappers? The Salt-n-Pepa’s, the Fab Five Freddy’s and even LL Cool J?! I can do this all day about every genre, but I’ll spare you.

I found a lil piece hope over the last 2-3 years. There ARE great artists out there, they’re just not getting enough exposure. I don’t know if people just don’t want great, thought-provoking, well written, well produced, non-auto tune crap or if the record industry has just forced garbage on us for so long that we forgot what great music is. But, there seems to be more hope now. Kem, who I’ve been a HUGE fan of since 2003, is now getting the proper recognition with his most recent studio release. Fitz & the Tantrums, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Fun, The Civil Wars, Karmin…all amazing. Of course, great acts like Adele, Corrinne Bailey Rae, Anthony Hamilton, Jaheim, Renee Olstead, The Black Keys, Mumford & Sons have had hits a few years more than the ones I listed prior, but I feel like they’re truly getting their due now. Or maybe I just feel like there’s more substance out there now.

Also, I miss the days when we had great music shows like Midnight Special, Soul Train, Austin City Limits, American Bandstand and Solid Gold. Laugh all you want, but I still dream of being a Solid Gold dancer! Anyways, they were a great way for new bands to get showcased. Especially right before MTV started! Remember MTV? LOL, just kidding, but that was the perfect way for music junkies like myself to get our fix. 24 hours of music videos, concert footage and interviews. Learn the latest dances, fashions and slang that goes hand in hand with music. I WANT MY MTV!!!

So there is my rant for the day. Would love to know if there are any artists you think I should check out!
