As much as I have always been a summer girl, I do love fall. I love the smell of pumpkin latte’s and candles, the leaves changing color and fall festivals. I enjoy playing my fall music mix, wearing my sweaters and jeans and enjoying a glass of wine outside with the air having a slight chill. It makes me want to cuddle, lounge by a fire and cook more. It is leading up to Halloween, Thanksgiving and my favorite holiday-Christmas. I still want to go back to school shopping, and I always think of the line from You’ve Got Mail when Tom Hanks says, “I love…fall. Makes me want to buy school supplies. I would buy you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.” Perfect. Bouquet of sharpened pencils. I don’t know if it’s nostalgia that makes us associate the smell of things like pencils and new supplies, or what. But it’s like another new beginning. A new school season in our life.
The downside is that it’s getting darker earlier. No more watching the sun set at 9pm. Whiskey Island, my second/summer home is coming to a close for the season. No more boating, or eating and drinking Lakeside. No more smell of suntan lotion, food cooking on the grill or weekend parties in the hot sun. Makes me misty-eyed just thinking about it. No more deciding which tank top, bikini or flip-flops ill throw on. Another summer season is coming to a close.
But back to the joy of the season. Now it is time to enjoy pumpkin carving, hot chocolate, apple cider and sitting fireside. Time to enjoy our nest more, maybe even have family and friends over for dinner more. It is the perfect time to bake and watch movies. And as much as I am not a fan of winter, it is time to start gearing up for all the great holidays that happen between now and the end of the year.
