I’m A Graduate!

I saw 2 different psychics between 2007 and 2008, and the only thing they both told me that actually came true was that I would go back to school. I had gone to Cuyahoga Community College right out of high school, with the intention of getting my degree in journalism and theatre. Really I just cared about acting at that point. Eventually I commuted to Kent State for a semester only to go back to Tri-C for one more semester then dropped out. That was early 2006. Since then I have worked many fun, various jobs and acted. But last year I had a revelation. I was doing promotions for Three Olives Vodka and had to run to the mall for something for my costume. As I was walking out of the store I had a Eureka! moment. All of a sudden it hit me how much I missed journalism. I missed Broadcasting. I realized as much as I loved acting and playing a character, I loved being me more. I love interviewing people and learning about them and have done it my whole life. Hell, I used to interview my mom at the kitchen table when I was a kid! So I pondered that revelation throughout the day. Later that night I had to do a promotion. As soon as I got into the Three Olives car my boss (and best friend) Jessica turns to me and goes, “Don’t be mad.” “What did you do?!” I respond. “I pretended I was you and signed you up for information for the Ohio Center for Broadcasting.” It was a clear-cut sign! “Are you kidding me?!” I say as I start laughing. I then told her about what happened earlier in the day. If Jessica hadn’t done that I don’t know if I would’ve actually gone back to school, but I’m so glad she did. That was last May and I started school in August. Here I am a year later and today, August 10th, I will finally, officially have my certification in radio and television broadcast. Time really does fly when you’re having fun! But with all the fun there were sweat, tears and lack of sleep-and all totally worth it.

I have so many people to thank, so I’ll start with my family and friends for all of their love & support. I’m beyond blessed to have you all in my life. And see mom, I told you I’d have a college degree by 30! Thank you to my best friend Jessica George for pushing me and believing in me. You really, truly are the greatest friend ever.

To my mentors: LeeAnn Sommers, my shero and kindred spirit, thank you for all of the professional and personal advice. I’m so grateful you brought me on board to learn from you and Brian, and thank you for your friendship my Aries sister! Brian Fowler thank you for opening my eyes to all that can be accomplished in radio-I am in awe of your talent and still have so much to learn from you. My best friend and hero Kenny Crumpton- I am so honored that I got to finally work with you and learned more than I ever imagined in just 3 short months. I am forever grateful and indebted to you for all that you’ve taught and given me. The Fox 8 Morning show team- thank you for all of the amazing opportunities! I hope to work with all of you again. The POD really is the greatest group of people, and I am so lucky I got to be a part of it. Thank you to all of the administrators and instructors for all of the patience and support you’ve given. Maggie, Rudy, Rachael, Chris, Ricky and Donesha I especially thank you for caring about the students and for everything you’ve done for me! And lastly to my fellow classmates, I’m so lucky I got to go through year-long journey with all of you. The stars definitely aligned when we were all put together in this class. I know each of you will become very successful, and I can’t wait to see where your path will take you.

So now the next chapter begins. Stay tuned for what happens next!
